Artifact Summary 8 – Forum Post – The News and International Affairs
The artifact presented for this program outcome is a proposal written for course OL 634 – Economic and Political Contexts. The program outcome my presented work represents is outcome number 8 “Create an organizational culture of diversity and inclusion.” (Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, 2018). One of the course objectives this presentation addressed was “Analyze the influence of organizational beliefs and policies on global economies.” (Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, 2018). The artifact presented, Analysis – The News and International Affairs, was a forum post. We were asked to review the evening news and express a viewpoint in text and using visual poetry.
The world is becoming smaller because of the instant communication channels including television and the internet. Whether operating a business or running a family, global news and international perspectives will be important to understand as they can greatly impact decisions. I chose to react to the news surrounding nuclear threats related to the testing of a missile by Iran. The social and cultural understanding in an organization must not be influenced by the news. In other words, we need to be sensitive to the people in our networks and those whom we come across who may be from these countries that are seemingly threating our safety. We have to trust that our global leadership will do the right thing and focus on the things we can control – the well being of our family and our compassion toward others in and out of the workplace.
The artifact is presented after the summary references.

Nuclear weapons have been in the news far too often lately. Iran has now launched a missile that is capable of traveling over 1,200 miles and carrying nuclear warheads (Reuters, 2017). There have been several news articles regarding North Korea and the testing of their nuclear weapons as well. Iran claims their missile that was tested is not for nuclear weapons but it seems doubtful that they would surround this launch with such fanfare for a typical missile.
As a parent, I have a lot more fear around the talks of missiles and nuclear capabilities. Looking at my kids playing on the trampoline or throwing a baseball pulls at my heart-strings. The thought of having to react to the threat of nuclear war is frightening. I would rather ignore the news and simply spend time with my kids. The threat can be consuming if kept top of mind. Our leaders must carry an even heavier burden with the threat knowing that their decisions will impact the entire global community.
